Gratitude Character Education

Gratitude character education must begin with understanding how important a character trait gratitude is. Gratitude opens a direct path between you and your Creator. You cannot stay upset and be grateful at the same time.

Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary has the following for the meaning of gratitude:

The state of being grateful; warm and friendly feeling toward a benefactor; kindness awakened by a favor received; thankfulness.

Empower your kids to understand the role gratitude plays in their life.

Have kids write thank you notes for gifts they receive, even small ones.

Have kids say Thank You regularly.

Have kids thank their bodies for all the gifts and functions her body performs. (I know, sounds a bit hokey, but it works). Our bodies are miracles, even when they are malfunctioning.

Teach them the meaning of gratitude by showing them examples of

  • cultivating gratitude,
  • gratitude poems,
  • gratitude quotations,
  • gratitude quotes,
  • poems about gratitude,
  • poems of gratitude, and
  • have them design their own symbols of gratitude,
like a gratitude rock, as featured in The Secret.

Teach them different ways they can become more grateful for what they have, and who they are.

Here's a brief scenario that happens with almost everyone. See if the shoe fits and if you'd like to change shoes.

When was the last time you were angry, upset, hurt, disappointed, down in the dumps because something you wanted to happen didn't?

How long did you stay fuming at the universe or the person who upset you?

Could you possibly have moved through these feelings quicker?

Yes, if you use gratitude. Character education empowers you to see what you have to be thankful for and to move towards a state of thankfulness as soon as possible.

Here's some rhyming verse from HeartMinders: Spiritual Lightposts Reminding Your Heart to Love.

Morsels of Gratefulness
When life seems destitute, and beats you upside down,
morsels of gratefulness loosen, a smile from a frown.

Being grateful costs nothing, it's yours for free.
Look all around you for your Gratefulness Inventory.

You get to choose your grateful ways, it's up to you to say:
"Do I focus on my meager lacks,
or be thankful one more day?"

If you crave inner peace, and are fed up with war;
choose gratefulness as the bedrock
of your loving inner core.

Notice how you feel when you are grateful. You can share gratitude character education with all your loved ones by example, i.e., being grateful for all of what you have.
